Cozy Tips for Natural Laundry Scent Boost
- It's more economical to purchase a slightly larger quantity of the baking soda and Epsom salts when you start to use your laundry scent boost on a regular basis.
- I use my laundry scent boost for nearly every load of clothes. For for my family, that means we do a load of laundry every other day or so.
- Depending on you how frequently you use your washer, you may need to replace your laundry scent boost each week. I will do this on a Sunday when I have taken the last load of laundry out for the start of the new week.
- You can use nearly any combination of essential oils and it is all to your scent preference.
- A great hack to capture every last drop of the essential oils is to use empty essential oil bottles for the scent boost. As the baking soda and Epsom salts release out the lingering oils in the bottles.
- Any size jar will do for the scent boost, you can adjust the amount of baking soda and Epsom salts. Always go for a 50/50 ratio.
- Feel free to add a cute label such as the one in the image above. I love using this label from Flair & Festive on Esty! Check out some of her other labels to use on essential oil roller balls. Learn how to make essential oil roller balls here!
How Much Laundry Scent Boost To Use
For an average size load of laundry, I will use a ¼ cup of the prepared laundry scent boost. However, if I feel my load of clothes is larger than normal or just needs an extra bit of care then I will add ½ cup of the scent boost. A measuring cup or a scoop will do the trick!
How Often Do You Use A Natural Laundry Scent Boost
You can use a natural laundry scent boost each time you wash a load of laundry. Simply, place a scoop or two of the scent boost into your washer drum with the clothes.
Will the Essential Oils Stain My Clothes
No, the essential oil will not stain your clothes as we are not adding the oils directly to the clothing. The oils have been drying in the baking soda and Epsom salt mix, which will not stain your clothes when used in this manner.
How Do I Know What Essential Oils to Use
The combination of oils does not matter much in my experience. I like to use the empty bottles of oil as it is the most bang for your buck in utilizing every last drop of essential oil.
However, there are times though when I do try to be more thoughtful in the scent I am using. Such as when I would like to do a load of blankets or bedding for the week. For this, I will try to use more calming oils such as Lavender, Gentle Baby, and Northern Lights Black Spruce. If you need a place to start, try to pair a lavender oil with a citrus or tree oil. This is always a great go to blend. Feel free to experiment and test out your own blends for you natural laundry scent boost!
Supplies for Natural Laundry Scent Boost
- Wide Mouth Jar (This one comes with labels)
- Scoop or Measuring Cup
- Baking Soda (Purchasing this in bulk is the most economical option to use this scent boost on a regular basis.)
- Epsom Salts (Bulk is best here too.)
- Essential Oils (Here is a great way to get started with essential oils. You can begin with a starter kit or purchase single oil bottles!)
The Cozy Details
Step 1: Gather you supplies and ingredients together.
Step 2: In a wide mouth jar, pour baking soda to about half way up the jar. Then pour in the Epsom salts to about ¾ of the way to the top of the jar. We are looking for a half and half ratio of baking soda and Epsom salt, but we need to leave room for the oils.
Step 3: Afterwards, close the lid to the jar and gently shake to mix the baking soda and Epsom salts.
Step 4: Next, take your empty bottles of essential oil and remove the outer and inner caps.
Note: If you are not using the empty bottles and just want to add drops of essential oil then at this point you would add the drops of oil (I would add at least 10-15 drops of essential oil), and skip Step 5.
Step 5: Take the empty bottles of oil with the caps removed and place them upside down into the jar of baking soda mix. Allow the jar to sit with the empty bottles with the lid on for overnight.
Step 6: Open the lid and remove the empty bottles. I will usually gently tap the bottles to release any of the baking soda or Epsom salts in the bottles. Then replace the lid and give it a gentle shake.
Step 7: From here you can use your natural laundry scent boost each time you wash your clothes. Just use a ¼ cup or so for each normal size load. I will place the natural laundry scent boost into the washer drum along with the clothes.
This is such an easy and quick way to begin to swap out unnecessary laundry products with all natural DIY replacements. There are no harsh chemicals or expensive additives here, just simple and natural! The best part is that you get to decide which essential oils you want to use and create your own unique scents for your family's laundry!
